KANURI PEOPLE IN HAUSALAND

This Book details the very important roles played by Kanuri Rulers, Scholars and Merchants in the propagation of Islam in the Sub-Saharan African Region with emphasis on Hausaland. The Book discuses the relationship that culminated into Hausaland Kingdoms being subservient to, and paying annual tributes to Kanem-Borno Caliphate. In these regards, special reference on the WAZIRI HARUNA DYNASTY of Katsina in Nigeria was made as a classical example of the Kanuri People in Hausaland for 444 years, from the Waziri Haruna’s Dynasty’s first King who ruled in Hausaland from 1579 AD to date.

Waziri Haruna Dynasty was established by Sheikh Alhaji Haruna who was a Prince of a Kanuri Ruling Dynasty that has been Ruling without a break for 444 years from 1579 AD to date. He came to Katsina City in 1897 where he was subsequently appointed as the first Waziri of Katsina in 1906 during whose tenure the famous Katsina College was established in 1921. And, as a Muslim Scholar, he set a National Nigerian Record as the first Nigerian to travel for the Hajj in Saudi Arabia by motor vehicle in 1928. He was the father of great Nigerians like the Waziri of Katsina Dr. Isa Kaita who was Northern Nigeria’s Minister for Education and presenter of the Bill to the Northern Nigerian Parliament for the establishment of Ahmadu Bello University in 1961. He also nurtured the University up to its first Convocation in 1965. Waziri Haruna’s grandchildren included General Hassan Usman Katsina the first and only Military Governor of Northern Nigeria; and the Waziri of Katsina Professor Sani Abubakar Lugga the key founder of Al-Qalam University Katsina, the first Islamic University in Nigeria.
